We ventured to a new restaurant in Citrus County called Kanes Cattle Company Steakhouse located on Citrus Avenue in the Crystal River. It is the former location of “Fatcats” and/or Hardwood Smokehouse Barbecue location (now located in the Mall). A little background on the owner of the restaurant: He is the owner of Lollygagger’s in Crystal River and The Loft restaurant also in Crystal River. He also owns his own cattle ranch however, when the meat processor could not guarantee that the only the meat from his ranch would be processed and sent to his restaurant- and not meat from other places-he decided not to use his cattle for the restaurant. The steaks in the restaurant are all prime beef. We have found that prime beef is in short commodity in Citrus County restaurants and stores. I have attached the restaurant’s menu. There is seafood available as well as pork and chicken. House Wine is a generous pour of Berringer and $5.25 a glass. I have included the wine/beer menu. They serve several kinds of beer. The restaurant itself looks much like it did when it was the smokehouse. There are two seating areas-one in the bar area and the other side has seating for about 12 tables.
Entrees come with two sides. I ordered the prime 6 ounce filet and it was very good. However, if you would like more seasoning you need to ask them to put salt, pepper and garlic on your steak. Art ordered his prime ribeye steak with mushrooms and it was good (not outstanding.) He ordered the steakhouse fries and they were very good. The salads are different: the house salad is a wedge salad and the Caesar salad is with grilled romaine lettuce. Beautiful food presentation. I like the fact that they serve water with a refill water bottle right at your table. The roll was a onion wheat roll and it was very good. We made a reservation for dinner. 352-794-6721
Other restaurant updates.
I stopped at Wawa for a quick breakfast sandwich which was available at the checkout counter. I had the bacon, egg and cheese croissant and it was very good. You do not have to order and wait for breakfast sandwiches. (several choices).
The Shamrock Bar in Floral City is a pretty good place for lunch. They have daily specials that are good and reasonable. Lunch at the Biscuit Barn (Hwy 19 Crystal River) OK .
Vintage on Fifth (Fifth Avenue, Crystal River) continues to be our favorite restaurant to celebrate a special occasion-like Christmas time! You just can’t beat the service and food. We always almost order the Rack of Lamb and they were delicious again this time.
Rocco‘s is a very good place for Italian although they’re a little bit higher in price than other local Italian places. We enjoyed our recent meal there -the lobster lasagne was good-plenty to bring home. Restaurant pretty empty-they used to be crowded!
Seafood Seller (Hwy 19) is still the best place for fresh seafood in Crystal River. However, you have to be prepared to wait for a table (or eat at the bar). If you have a party of 8 or party of 10-12, there are two spaces that they have for seating and reservations…call ahead.
Beverly Hills Bangkok Thai is a good place for a delicious, freshly made entree and promptly served meal. The wonton soup and spring rolls are yummy.
