Something I learned this week…. do you know what a smart meter is?
“Just as your mobile phones, laptops and tablets are continually upgraded as technology evolves, a smart meter is the next evolution of the traditional electric meter. A smart meter records energy consumption using digital technology and then transmits the data to Duke Energy using two-way communication. This information allows us to provide you with better visibility into your energy usage.”
Do you know that Duke Energy plans to install a smart meter on every home in Citrus County? Is that a good idea or bad? Someone told me that they are not a good idea… that they are a health hazard so I went to work doing some research and now it’s up to you to make a decision do you want a smart meter on your home? Is it an invasion of your privacy and/or a health risk?
BD’s Postcard notification of the installation arrived this past Friday…Duke Energy is scheduling Black Diamond installation for a February start date. If you opt out of the smart meter it will cost you $60 to cancel and then another $16 a month to have someone come out and read your meter.
Are they really a health risk? You can do your own research but here are some articles and a video. Watch the video and read the articles… you have to make a decision. You might also feel that it is “big brother is watching you.” Is it an invasion of your privacy?
The company said smart meters make it easier for customers and Duke Energy to monitor electricity usage, make quicker repairs and customize service. There is no extra charge.
