If you are a paddler, love to be on the water and love competition…why not try “Dragon Boat Racing?” The Dragon Boat Race and Festival in Hernando on Lake Hernando (located where Hwy 486 dead ends into Hwy 41) is scheduled for Saturday, November 14. There is a kickoff party at the lake on Friday night.
Who are the participants? Local clubs, communities, business organizations, schools, fire and sheriff departments, National Guard auxiliaries and friends are participating for love of the sport, competition and a good cause. There are even teams from other counties and an outstate team.
Black Diamond is still looking for team members: “The team name is the Black Diamond Land Sharks and we have great costumes. I am still looking for more volunteers as we would like a total of 21 and so far have 11 committed.” Kathy Norris. Contact her. I believe it is $30 to participate.
There are two different boat sizes for teams of 11 or 21. The age restriction is 14 years and up. There are no team restrictions like all men or all women. Last year 55 teams participated.
In addition to the races, there is music, food and drink. There is an Arts and Craft Village, business tent area and kids play area.
Most importantly the event is for a good cause: This event supports the Food Bank and the Veteran Foundation. Sponsorships are also available…visit the website for more information. Andy Smith is the events coordinator 352.201.6500.
