This week I add a short video (very short) to my restaurant blogs…I am an amateur at this and still learning…
Evans and Thomases ventured to a new restaurant called Blue Gills Bait Shop and Eatery, 2727 Carol Rose Highway, Hernando. It is across from The Burger Station-if you’re familiar with that area. (In fact, Burger Station, Reds (Hwy 200) and Blue Gills all have same owner.)
Nice lake view (drone picture on Facebook is much prettier than the video I took). It is not a fancy eatery since it is a bait shop serving food. There is a food truck preparing the food. However, it was pretty good food. As was explained to us, they could not get the county to change the zoning. So there are plastic utensils.
They do serve beer and wine but our night, they had run out of white wine.
Everybody enjoyed their food and we all agreed we would return to the restaurant. The special of the night was gator. No takers from us. Art’s prime rib could have been rarer but it was tasty. Mike enjoyed his prime rib and we learned you can ask for a metal utensils for eating such an item where plastic doesn’t do well. (see video) Karen’s fish tacos were plentiful and tasty. My mahi mahi sandwich was a large enough portion for my dinner because I did not want to eat the bread! Cole slaw is very good. Reasonable prices.
They are going to be having special taco Tuesdays and they will have live music on Saturdays and some Fridays. (352) 419-5408.
I have heard from two different parties about their dining experiences at Wallace’s of the Greenhouse former Greenhouse Bistro. Both reports are all favorable here is what Janice and Steve report:
“…We found it to be generally very good. Ambiance and service great, Steve’s dinner (pasta verde) was great, mine(paella) not very good. They offer an inexpensive wine (Save San Francisco) that was quite drinkable. We’ll go back emend but I question their “scratch kitchen” they boast. I felt their yellow rice was right out of a package.”
I am adding to this blog after tonight’s meal. We all had the halibut special and it was delicious. You can substitute the mashed potatoes. Salad not included, wine pour adequate and the creme brûlée delicious! We will go back. My video was interrupted by the rain. They have a re-decorated the inside of the restaurant a bit. The butterfly garden is gone and it is a still a cozy size restaurant.
Meanwhile a re-visit to the West 82 :
A group of 12 of us reserved a table at the West 82 Bar and Grill at the Plantation Inn. As I have said before, I like the setting because you feel you are on vacationing at a resort-which it is! Food and service is usually good.
Tonight: the dinner selections included mahi-mahi (it was OK-vegetable never served), crab cakes (good but not the french fries) seafood marinara (mixed reviews on the sauce), seafood Alfredo (very good) grilled shrimp (very good but mashed potatoes cold) scallops (OK but small in size), wedge salad with grouper (OK but not served correctly… got the dressing wrong), Strawberry Fields salad added shrimp (good but served it with dressing; it was ordered without the dressing), and salmon (rated good.) I love the cornbread! I would say the majority of the group decided they were in no hurry to return there.
Reminder Plantation has boat cruises available; (day and sunset cruises)
