It is the time of year to shop and eat out. We tried some good spots.
We went back to the Bait Shop in Hernando to try the menu again. We happen to hit Tuesday which is “Taco Tuesday” and our server talked us into trying the tacos. Karen , Mike, Art and I tried the mahi-mahi and their “bait shop shrimp” tacos. The “Bait Shop shrimp” is similar to Bonefish’s “bang bang shrimp.” You can see they serve huge portions-remember this restaurant is owned by the owner of “Reds” noted for its large portions. The tacos were delicious. There are additional tco choices including prime rib taco. Tacos are not something we would want to have every day, or once a week, but these were really good and tasty. Tacos are also served with: tater tots and a delicious coleslaw. The mahi-mahi was $18 and the shrimp were $17.
With Lloyd and Joan we ventured to the mall to try the Hardwood Smokehouse in its new location. Lloyd and Joan had been there the week before and we pleased with food and service. This week when they ordered the same thing…the turkey for the salad was not ”pulled smoked turkey” but sliced and the pulled pork sandwich was more sliced than “pulled” pork. We must’ve been there too early-we were there at 6 PM (?!) but the pork butt was not quite the right temperature to pull it off the bone. My salad with pulled pork was really good. Art’s beef brisket was very good served and with fries, cole slaw and a “hoecake” (cornbread pancake). The hoecake is really tasty and if you like spicy french fries… then you’ll like their fries. This new location seems to have more open space seating than the original location. You don’t have to venture far into the mall…its entrance is right next to Rural King.
Amy’s on the Avenue for lunch… especially at Christmas… is a delight. The crab bisque was very good and they are noted for their chicken salad-yum. Art always orders the BLT! If you have not had Amy’s cookie-what a great cookie! They will not share the recipe and I have tried to duplicate to no avail. We also love to shop for Christmas ornaments, gifts and decor in the shop at this time of year.
Cattle Dogs is opening another location-now in Crystal River- in the Highlander’s spot on Citrus Avenue. Love their “fancy” gourmet lunches! Art will okay it for lunch once in awhile.
