This week I report on new places to eat in Citrus County as well as introduce “DoorDash” -food delivered to your home from local restaurants…
Two weeks ago, five of us ventured to a new restaurant in town called the Elegant Pelican. ( It is in the former Seven Rivers/ Crystal River Country Club location.) It has a good size menu containing appetizers, flatbreads, hamburgers, Cubans that kind of fare. Karen had corn fritters that she liked. She and I both had the grilled romaine. It is a good salad although my shrimp add-on was overcooked. Tyler had the unending fried fish and it was not very good. He and Mike both agree that the crab cakes at Seafood Cellar are better, although these were good. Mike also had the pork flat bread which was very good. Art had the special of the night which was a ribeye steak and it was good. The signature “flat” french fries are OK—between a chip and a french fry. Reasonable wine prices and there are nightly specials. We were there on karaoke night, but got there early enough so that the music did not disturb our dinner. They can accommodate a large group. Owners of this restaurant also own a Mexican restaurant.
This last week we tried the new barbecue place in Crystal River: BubbaQues. (Located on Citrus Avenue- the former site of Café on the Avenue, River Ranch and Mullet Hole.) Cute country theme decor, the barbecue is good. As you know, the Hardwood Café down the street has been closed due a kitchen fire. We feel Hardwood is the better BBQ. We all had fall off the bone ribs-St Louis as well as Meaty Meaty. They serve the ribs smoked and you add your own barbecue sauce. They have at least seven or eight sauces to choose from. I also tried the smoked turkey and it was very good. The sides are tastey: coleslaw, potato salad and beans. If you like Texas toast that is also served. Karen did not care for her jalapeño poppers wrapped in bacon. She felt the bacon overpowers the pepper taste. We were too full to try dessert, but they do have Fried Oreos. The drink and food prices are very reasonable
I had to try the Wawa (486-491, Lecanto) on the grand opening day. I was greeted at the door with a free sample taste of a mango smoothie and it was delicious! The greeter was very helpful and walked me through the whole ordering system with the ordering kiosk; how to get your drink; how to pay; where to pick up food. They do have items already made up. I thought they did a good job for a grand opening crowd. I did wait 14 minutes for my chicken quesadilla but it was worth it. Karen and Mike also went that day and liked the meatball sub and chicken corn chowder. Breakfast menu looks interesting; here is the menu:
Burkes of Ireland (Crystal River Citrus Avenue) is closed, but it is opening as a new restaurant. The plans are for an “upscale coffee wine beer bar” called The Crew. Owner says the bar will it will cater to business people and tourists interested in a place where you can come in and grab a coffee, wine or beer, work on the computer; meet people. It’s not a sport or craft beer bar nor a nightclub.
I am now researching the DOOR DASH craze…food delivery to your home or pre-order for pick up …It is just getting started in Citrus County and for my address, there are about 12 restaurants (and growing!) that participate according to the app: World Fusion, Wendys, Brothers Pizza, Rocco’s Pizza and Cafe, Papa Johns Pizza, Chans, Marianai’s Stinky Rose, Bangkok Thai, Havana House, Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters, Mc Donalds, New England Pastry and Cafe and Raw Juice Bar and Cafe.
You need to download the doordash app to use the service.
