It’s time for a monthly restaurant update. We ventured to the West 82 Bar and Grill at the Plantation Inn to test the new chef and new menu. I also include a review of Crystal River’s new Coney Island and update some re-visits to local dining spots.
Last Wednesday, six of us dined at the West 82 Bar and Grill: they have a new chef and a new menu, or so I thought. Although they had “chef” specials that night, the new menu was not ready yet. They still serve the same pre-cooked corn bread that crumbles when you cut it…it tastes OK. The house salad has improved with delish ingredients. However, Art could not finish his salad because the honey mustard dressing was way “too hot.” The Caesar and wedge salad were very good (pictures included with this blog). Vicky ordered the fried grouper and it was OK. Karen and I ordered the seafood platter (grouper, scallops and shrimp grilled) and it was very good. Mike E had the surf and turf, and although he enjoyed his food, the rouemlade sauce was the hottest he’s ever had and he could not eat it. Art had the grilled mahi-mahi with the corn and pepper vegetable. Good tasting. Their french fries are very good. Mike M had the Chicken Roulade: chicken breast stuffed with roasted mushrooms, parmesan cheese, smoked ham, served with potato croquette and roasted garlic cream sauce. It was a lot of chicken and rated very good. A glass of wine is $5.50. It is not a restaurant I would frequent on a regular basis, but if you’re looking for a decent meal and halfway decent service ( salad plates weren’t cleared before the arrival of dinner and we had to ask for more water) you might want to try the West 82. We returned to Brothers Pizza (Hwy 44 and 486 Crystal River near Publix) for some Italian. LeAnna and I had the gluten free personal pan pizza. Each of us had a vegetarian version and we both liked our pizza (the crust is made from cauliflower but you never know it.) Art had his spaghetti with meatballs and Italian sausage which he loves and he had two more meals with the leftovers. Jack had spaghetti and also enjoyed it also. (352-564-9374)
Cajun Jimmy’s Seafood Seller is always a good place for fish, seafood and “fresh caught” specials. Located on Hwy 19 Crystal River expect a wait for seating. If you have a large party of 10 or more you can reserve the large table.
Dan’s Clam (Crystal River -Hwy 44 and in Homosassa ) on a Friday, in season-we had a little wait! You can make reservations. We like the seafood (grouper) and whole lobster! Hamburgers are excellent also. (352)795-9081, (352) 628-9588 )
Outback in Inverness seldom disappoints with its good service and good food. Call ahead seating recommended (352-637-9292).
Not of fan of the Brooksville Coney Island, I was happy to hear from Russ and Judy that they did visit the newest branch of the popular Brooksville spot-now in Crystal River (southwest corner of State Road 44 and Seventh Avenue). They agree that the “coney” sauce is not the best and prefer the chili sauce topping. The Chicago dog was good. Vicki and Mike also report it was good and very reasonable. They liked the hot dog with chili sauce and hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard. The Taco Salad is big and pretty good.
I am happy to report that my boss asked for a restaurant recommendation for a special occasion and I suggested our favorite: Vintage on Fifth in Crystal River, And they loved it! (352) 794-0004 . You need to make reservations way ahead of time!
