Let’s Get Cycling Citrus County!
This week I once again encourage you try biking-especially an e-bike…I include a new article from a local bike shop as well as repeat a part of an earlier blog on biking. We have great trails here in Citrus County-and with an e-bike-I can even handle the hills in Black Diamond! Great hilly trail in Ocala too!

Tips to Get Baby Boomers Riding Again
Baby Boomers can have fun, improve their health, and form new friendships as their explore our great nation on a bicycle. Getting back on a normal bicycle seat can be painful for many. A healthy habit can be easier to start…and maintain…if it is comfortable and easy for anyone regardless of physical condition. Therefore, a recumbent bike or trike (a three wheeled bicycle) with electric assistance is the the best way to get moving…again.
Here are five helpful tips to get cycling
1. Choose to Ride
Many of us read blog articles and videos online. The only way that you can experience a better life is to choose to actively pursue it.
Few if any other activities have so many positive benefits as riding
Remember whizzing around your neighborhood on your bike as a kid. Many of us didn’t return home until we were hungry or the sun went down. Ride a recumbent trike and do your best to NOT smile. We haven’t met a person yet, who has been able to do it and not be grinning ear-to-ear. Riding an e-trike or electric assist trike is even more fun!
Riding a trike will help burn pounds away and fight off Type 2 diabetes, improve cardiovascular health with low-impact, comfortable movement, boost memory and concentration.
Bicycling is a social activity…but recumbent cycling is like an extended family wherever you go. Recumbent bike and trike riders will invite you to their house for dinner.
2. Get the Right Trike
Riding a recumbent trike, especially one with electric assistance, is a joy that can only be appreciated in person. The perfect trike should be easy to learn, cradle your aches-and-pains in comfort, provide freedom to ride towards a healthier you.
Many of the benefit of a trike can be missed, if you buy a trike based on price or other factor…rather than based on your needs. As the trike experts, we have the experience and knowledge to tailor solutions to solve your needs.
3. Find a Riding Buddy
Like any new hobby, it can be hard to find someone to share your interest with you. This ain’t a problem on a trike! If you can’t find a buddy, give us a call and we’ll take you on a ride. Better yet, subscribe to our newsletter and join us on our regular, group rides.
In the old fable of the tortoise and the hair, both the tortoise and the hair started at the same time; however, they didn’t finish that way. Often when we start exercising, our exercise buddy may start with us but have a fast pace. This causes a hurry-up and wait for them and a stressful, hurry up and no-wait for the new person. While a positive person does their best to make the experience pleasurable, it is difficult for the person starting out.
An electric trike makes keeping pace with your Speedy Gonzolez of a riding buddy so much easier! An electric assistance trike lets anyone keep pace with the fastest of cyclist.
4. Find a Good Place to Ride
What makes a good place to ride? Good places to ride are ones with minimal car traffic, smooth road surfaces and regularly spaced places to sight see and grab a drink and bite to eat. We recommend everyone visit the Withlacoochie Trail in Floral City. Its the trike capital of the world!
Great places for riding can be found at Rails to Trails also.
5. Track Your Ride
Consider using a smartphone app to track your rides. Its not important to focus on who’s the fastest; but, rather to motivate you to explore new routes and track your progress as you gain strength and endurance. Be sure to bring an extra battery pack for your smartphone on a long ride since the GPS activity will quickly train your battery.
from an earlier blog:
Biking is great exercise and a wonderful way to see a variety of natural settings found in Citrus County. Many of the bike trails are suitable for walks and hikes. If this is your favorite way to go, you can choose from a cross-country excursion, a meandering scenic day ride or a more primitive off-road track. Today I talk about the Citrus County paved trail and the newest vehicle in biking: pedal assisted bikes aka e-bikes.
As many of you know Art and I have become avid bike riders in the last few years. Every week we travel to a trailhead on the Withlacoochee Rails-Trails. We enjoy the 46 + miles of paved trails:the exercise and being out of doors! In the summer we pack up our bikes and head to Michigan and last year we went to Wisconsin. What we find in Michigan and Wisconsin are quite a few hills and so we became interested in “E bikes.” Upon returning this year we converted my recumbent bike into an E bike and I can’t tell you the difference it has made! Now I can even ride in Black Diamond— I can handle those hills! An e-bike just gives you a little bit of a burst of Power. You are always peddling so you are still exercising! Happy to talk to you about it!
See what Dave’s World Cycle says:
“Why You’re Sure to Love E-Bikes
First and foremost – what is an electric bike? Also known as an e-bike or a pedal assist bicycle, electric bikes are human-powered two-wheeled bikes with an integrated electric motor and rechargeable battery to provide you with additional power and speed. These bikes are lightweight, easy and fun to ride, and available in a variety of bike styles… Ease Your Effort . Hills are a cake walk when you have the power of an e-bike motor! A light, easy pedal will propel you anywhere!”
You are encouraged to buy a bike locally…why? You may need to have your bike serviced and if the shop does not have the parts…and cannot get the parts…you are out of luck! I was told of a person who spent less than a thousand dollars on a “online order” bike only to have it last a year-no parts available to fix. Buying a bike locally, you can get try out the bike to see if you like it, and have it properly fitted.
A peddle assist bike can cost between $1500 and up.
A popular cycling route (and a good walking trail) is the”Rails to Trails” Withlacoochee State Trail. Formerly a railroad right-of-way, the 47-mile trail is paved its entire length through Citrus County. Opened this last summer: another 10 mile one way (20 round trip) route off the Rails to Trails: The Good Neighbor Trail: is a ride to downtown Brooksville.
If you don’t have your own bicycle, all the shops have rental bikes.

“I have a tough time choosing a favorite trail…Barge Canal out to the Gulf…Hernando to Inverness…Inverness to Floral City…Floral City to Istachatta. We have seen deer on the Floral City to I-75 ride and beautiful wildflowers all summer. All kinds of bikers, horseback riders, walkers and joggers are utilizing this trail. We see a security patrol car almost every ride. The Withlacoochee Rails to Trails has got to be the best trail to ride in Florida!
